The Horror of “Alien” Reproduction
Ask anyone how the creatures in “Alien” and “Aliens” reproduce, and you’ll get the same recap every time: the queen lays an egg, and a face-hugger hatches, finds a host, and implants a chest-burster. But think of the real nasty parts where the rubber meets the road; when and where do aliens have sex? How does sperm meet egg? And why and how exactly is the queen laying eggs that have two separate creatures inside each?
As made-up-for-horrific-effect as the alien creatures may be, the answers can actually be found in nature, with a little bit of imagination…and turn out to be even more horrifying than anything the movies implied.
This stuff is discussed in the making of featurettes. The fact that the aliens take on some of the DNA of their hosts is why they’re called xenomorphs. Also the fact that the movie was an allegory for male rape.
